San Francisco’s population grew ever so slightly between 2022 and 2023, according newly published U.S. Census Bureau data, but its modest increase was still the largest in the nine-county Bay Area.
New U.S. Census Bureau data shows San Francisco’s population grew by about 1,200 in the last tracking period and still remains one of the most populated metropolitan areas in the country.
Between July 2022 and 2023, The City’s population rose from roughly 807,774 residents to 808,988 residents. San Francisco is also the 13th-most populated metropolitan area in the nation, a ranking it has held since 2021, according to Census data released earlier this week.
“Domestic migration patterns are changing, and the impact on counties is especially evident,” said Lauren Bowers, chief of the Census Bureau’s population estimates branch in a statement.
In the nine-county Bay Area, San Francisco saw the most population growth in the one-year period.
Solano County trailed behind The City, growing by about 330 residents between July 2022 and 2023. The area swelled from 448,885 residents to 449,218 living in the area.

Santa Clara County saw minimal growth over the same time period, growing by just 1,000 residents to roughly 1,878,000 people living in the county.
Census data showed that the remainder of Bay Area’s counties shrunk between July 2022 and July 2023.
Sonoma County had about 482,000 residents in the summer of 2022, then just about 1,000 fewer a year later.
Contra Costa County’s population also took a hit. In July 2022, 1,157,019 residents called the county home. By the following year, the U.S. Census estimated that 1,155,025 people lived there, which was a drop of about 2,000 residents.
San Mateo and Alameda counties underwent greater drop-offs, according to the data.
Marin County and Napa County ranked lowest in terms of Bay Area growth. Marin County’s population decreased by about 1,747 residents between July 2022 and July 2023. Napa County’s number of residents also decreased by about 1,154 residents.
